Established in 1936, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences was known as Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai). TISS Mumbai is deemed to be a university under section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Tata Institute of Social Sciences Mumbai is host to twelve schools namely School of Social Work, School of Development Studies, School of Management and Labour Studies, School of Health Systems Studies, School of Media and Cultural Studies, School of Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance.
TISS Mumbai has six independent centres: Centre for Education Innovation and Action Research, Centre for Excellence on Adolescents and Youth, Centre for Lifelong Learning, Centre for Studies in Sociology of Education, Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policies and Centre for Library and Information Management & SDTM Library.
Tata Institute of Social Sciences is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of ‘A’ and recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). In the NIRF 2021 Ranking, TISS Mumbai has been ranked 70th in the overall category. Considering various graduation outcomes, teaching, learning, resources, perception, outreach and inclusivity, research and professional practice, the varsity has been ranked 37 in the NIRF 2021 ranking in the university category.
