NEET UG 2026 did not run to plan. The exam scheduled for 3 May 2026 was cancelled, a re-test was held on 21 June, and the result came out on 16 July. If you are trying to work out what actually happened and what comes next, this is the sequence.
What happened
NTA conducted NEET UG 2026 on 3 May 2026 and released provisional answer keys on 6 May. On 12 May, following inputs from central and law enforcement agencies about an alleged paper leak, NTA cancelled that sitting and the matter was handed to the CBI. The application fee for that sitting is being refunded.
A re-examination was announced on 15 May. Candidates were given a window from 15 to 21 May to update their address and choice of exam city. There was no fresh registration and no fresh fee.

The result
22.79 lakh candidates registered for the cycle. Close to 20 lakh appeared at the 21 June re-test, held at 5,440 centres across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad, in 13 languages. 11.21 lakh qualified. Aryan Gupta from Punjab and Panshul Bansal from Haryana topped with 715 out of 720.
Two things to do now
Claim your refund. If you sat the cancelled 3 May exam, the window to submit or confirm bank details for the fee refund on neet.nta.nic.in closes on 31 July 2026 at 11:50 PM.
Ignore scorecards circulating on social media. On 20 July NTA issued a public notice about fabricated and digitally altered scorecards and OMR sheets being submitted, including AI generated ones. Doing this is an offence under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. Download your scorecard from neet.nta.nic.in and nowhere else.
What comes next
Admission runs through counselling, not through the exam result. MCC handles the All India Quota and each state handles its own 85 per cent. MCC has not published the 2026 schedule yet.
