MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery) is an undergraduate-level medical degree. This programme deals with imparting the right knowledge for students to conduct diagnoses, find treatment and medicines and also perform surgeries on patients. Through this degree, individuals fulfil their dream of becoming a doctor. MBBS is a professional degree in the medical science field. For getting into the MBBS programme, students are required to clear the NEET exam. 

MBBS is a 5 ½ year-long course. It includes one year of rotator internship at hospitals, health centres and health camps organized by non-profit organizations (NGOs). This degree is offered only in full-time degree mode. During the MBBS programme, students get to learn practical and theoretical lessons related to medical science. Every year around 18 lakh students aspiring to pursue an MBBS course.

After the MBBS degree, graduates can use Dr. with their names. MBBS students can also work in both private and public hospitals, on trains or in military forces. If they want to study further, they can also pursue postgraduate medical degrees like MD, and MBA after receiving an MBBS degree.

What is the required eligibility for MBBS?

Individuals are required to meet the eligibility criteria to qualify for studying MBBS subjects. The criteria are given below.

1. Students should have passed class 12th/ higher secondary/pre-university qualifying examination with the science stream. The compulsory subjects should be Physics, Chemistry and Biology. They should have also studied English as the main subject.
2. Candidate should have scored a minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying examination if he/she belongs to the unreserved category while OBC/SC/ST should get 40% and PWD candidate should have 45% marks.
3. Candidate should have a clear NEET examination.
4. The student should be an Indian National for admission through NEET.
5. The minimum age limit is 17 years at the time of admission. 
6. Some universities like AIIMS and JIPMER also conduct separate entrance exams. So if a candidate aspires to get admission to these colleges, they need to give a separate entrance exam.

Semester 1: Anatomy-Microanatomy, gross anatomy, embryology and genetics, neuroanatomy, biochemistry-molecular biology, hormones

Semester 2: Biochemistry-cancer and cancer makers, biomolecules, enzymes, food assimilation and nutrition, physiology-respiratory system, nutrition, kidney

Semester 3: Community medicine- infestations, ineffective dermatoses, allergic disorders, gonococcal and non-gonococcal infections, allergic disorders, forensic science-toxicology, forensic medicine

Semester 4: Pathology- general pathology, systemic pathology, practical, pharmacology-general, pharmacology- cardiovascular system, antacids, hormones, miscellaneous, gastrointestinal and respiratory system

Semester 5: Microbiology, bacteriology, microbiology, clinical postings in wards

Semester 6: Community medicine, OPD

Semester 7: Medicine and allied subjects- clinical pharmacology

MBBS fees in private colleges/institutes are much more expensive than in government colleges. In private colleges, the fees of MBBS lie anywhere in the range of 2 lakhs to 40 lakhs per annum. 

Career opportunities after MBBS:

After completing the MBBS degree, individuals get a plethora of career opportunities. He/she can work as a doctor. After finishing the degree, he/she can even perform surgeries. The scope after MBBS is divided into aspects, career-wise and higher studies-wise.

After MBBS, some individuals start working as junior doctors in hospitals or nursing homes. They work under senior doctors and assist the senior doctors in surgery or general treatment of patients in the wards or OPD. While working with senior doctors, they gain skills and expertise. Some of the MBBS graduates also work as general physicians and practice general medicine. While some work as medical researchers. There is a vast range of career opportunities after MBBS like medical writers, faculty members, medical officers, healthcare informatics etc.
